Indie band PaperDoll has just made a triumphant return from their second tour of China, playing 15 shows in 15 days and conquering five major markets; Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Suzhou, and Hangzhou. The energetic four-piece grabbed TV headlines with record-breaking crowds during the closing of the Shanghai World Expo. They also made history as the final guests on EXPO 360, a show highlighting the best of the World Expo.
And now they are performing live at Sulu DC’s Anniversary Show. Here’s some insider information from vocalist Teresa Lee of PaperDoll:
1) Origin of the name PaperDoll: How and when did the band form?
We all met on the Lower East Side (NYC) playing music. It was a week before our first gig and we didn’t have a name. I looked down at our set list – PaperDoll was written down. So that’s what we called ourselves. We don’t play that song any more.
2) Describe your style.
Kick Ass.
2a) Influences on the style today?
Bands and People who kick ass. We’re really lucky to have met some amazing talents…like the writers/cast/crew of The People I’ve Slept With – this film our music is in. So creative, edgy, and fun. It’s airing on LOGO next month. Also fashion is a huge influence… we played at NY Fashion Week, LA Fashion Gala and Frexh in Shanghai. This amazing designer – Flora Zeta gave me a few outfits to wear on stage during our China Tour. I wore one on the finale of Expo 360 TV in Shanghai and just felt really confident. I love her clothes.
3) Memorable experience/event as a performer?
Last week, at World Expo Shanghai – 6,000 people showed up. Had to get extra security. A few people rushed the stage. It was awesome. Also, when I mentioned on stage that I’m an ABC (American Born Chinese) an older lady started cheering and crying. I’d like to think it was because she was proud, but it was crowded so it was likely that some one stepped on her foot.
4) Personal play list? What’s currently on heavy rotation on your Ipod/stereo?
This morning, I listened to Dean Martin’s “how do you like your eggs in the morning”. This week, it’s been a steady rotation of Far East Movement “Like a G6″, Metric’s whole Fantasies album – if you don’t have it, but it now, and the new Archade Fire album.
5) Your theme song?
We just got back from China and I’ve been getting up at 6am. Saved by the Bell is on TV…So for the past few days, my theme song has been…
When I wake up in the morning,
and the ‘larm gives out a warning,
I don’t think I’ll ever make it on time,
By the time i grab my books,
and i give myself a look,
I’m at the corner just in time to see the bus fly by,
It’s alright ’cause I’m Saved by the Bell
6) Random fact about yourself that not many people know?
I’m 5’9″. Lots of people think I’m short cause I have a large head.
7) Upcoming performances? Any projects or collaborations in the works?
We’re the featured band in Facebook’s new game Bar World. Launches next week. We have a song out in Mandarin (video). Sulu friends can get it for free on our website www.paperdollband.com/download. Also, our new album will be out next year.
